Picknic

Privacy Policy

Effective October 20, 2026

Picknic is an iPhone app that helps 2–4 people pick what to eat or do together by passing one phone around. This policy explains what information the app handles. The short version: there are no accounts, your picks stay on your phone, and the only data that leaves the phone is anonymous usage and crash data, which you can turn off.

What stays on your phone

Picknic stores the following only on your device. We never receive it.

Picknic does not ask for your name, email, contacts or location, and cannot see your photos. You can clear history in Settings. Deleting the app deletes all of this data.

What we collect

To learn whether Picknic works for people and to fix crashes, the app uses two Google services: Firebase Analytics and Firebase Crashlytics. They collect:

DataExamplesWhy
Usage events A game started, the deck (Food or Activity), number of players, how many cards matched, which cards were opened, shared (and the app used to share, such as Messages) or finally chosen, whether the weekend reminder was turned on or opened, when the app asked for a rating, time spent actively playing, and whether the session was finished, paused or resumed. Each game has a random ID so its events can be grouped. Understand whether groups reach a decision and come back to play again.
Crash reports Where in the code the app crashed, device model, iOS version, app version. Find and fix bugs.
Device identifiers An app-instance ID created by Firebase for this installation; Crashlytics installation ID. Count devices and group events from the same installation.
Basic device info Device model, iOS version, language, app version, and approximate country derived by Google from the IP address. See which devices and regions use the app.

We do not send how any individual person voted, and we do not collect names or anything that identifies you. Picknic does not use the advertising identifier (IDFA), does not track you across other apps or websites, does not show ads, and does not sell or share data for advertising.

Turning it off

Open Settings in Picknic and switch off Share usage data. This stops both Firebase Analytics and Crashlytics from collecting new data on this phone. The app works the same with it off.

Find nearby

On a Food card, “Find nearby” opens Apple Maps with a search for that dish. Picknic does not access your location. What happens in Maps is covered by Apple’s privacy policy.

Sharing a card

“Share” on a card opens the iOS share sheet with the card picture and title. You choose where it goes; Picknic does not see who you send it to. If you pick “Save Image”, iOS asks once for permission to add photos. Picknic can only add that picture and cannot see your photo library.

Weekend reminder

The weekend reminder is optional. Picknic offers it after you choose a card, or you can turn it on in Settings; iOS then asks for permission to send notifications. The reminder is scheduled on your phone, so no server sends it and no contact details are needed. Turn it off in Picknic Settings or in iOS Settings.

Who processes the data

Google processes usage and crash data on our behalf as a service provider. See Privacy and Security in Firebase and Google’s privacy policy. Data may be processed in the United States or other countries where Google operates.

How long we keep it

Analytics event data is kept for the retention period set in Google Analytics (currently 2 months), after which Google deletes it; aggregated reports that do not identify a device may be kept longer. Crashlytics keeps crash reports for 90 days.

Your choices and rights

You can turn off collection at any time, clear history in Settings, or delete the app. Because we do not know who you are, we usually cannot link collected data to you. If you would like us to delete analytics data for your device, email us and we will help with what Firebase allows. Depending on where you live (for example California), you may have rights to know about, access or delete personal information; contact us to use them.

Children

Picknic is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

Changes

If this policy changes, we will update this page and the effective date above. Significant changes will also be noted in the app’s release notes.
